A Day in Hoonah (aka Icy Straight Point): Authentic Everyday Alaska

Welcome back, intrepid explorers of the web and sea! Next, we’re embarking on a journey through the Alaskan ports, one blog post at a time. First stop? The unassuming, yet unforgettable, Hoonah. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill tourist trap; it’s the real deal, folks. A slice of genuine Alaska, served up with a side of fog and a dash of local charm.

Imagine stepping off your cruise ship into a scene so thick with fog, you’d swear you were walking into a mystery novel. Then, as if by magic, the fog dissipates to reveal a day so stunningly clear, you’ll wonder if Mother Nature isn’t showing off just for you. The views in Hoonah? They’re like a postcard, but better because you’re actually in it.

Now, let’s talk about what makes Hoonah the heart of authenticity. It’s not just the scenery—it’s the stories, the history, and yes, the mini donuts. Upon arrival, we were treated to a crash course in the salmon cannery that tells the history of Hoonah,it was as fascinating as it was unexpected. There was also a display of historic Alaskan dancing by the native Huna Tlingit tribe which has been in the area for centuries., Showtimes are sparse so you will have to be willing to wait for the next show. Unfortunately, we had just missed it, so we didn’t wait around, definitely a regret.

We decided against excursions, choosing instead to wander and stumble upon Hoonah’s hidden gems. And stumble we did, right into a local spot dishing out mini donuts. But these weren’t your average carnival fare; served up warm and fresh, these were the kind of donuts that dreams are made of, available in over 20 flavors. I went for apple cider and cinnamon, and let me tell you, they did not disappoint.

Feeling adventurous? A quick bus ride into town reveals Hoonah’s understated charm. This place doesn’t need to boast about its brush with reality TV fame (#AlaskanBushPeople, anyone?). It’s confident in its authenticity, from the everyday sights to the lack of commercial fanfare.

As you meander through the streets, you’ll notice the absence of the hustle and bustle typical of tourist destinations. Since there is only opportunity for one cruise ship to dock at a time, it wasn’t crowded. Instead, Hoonah invites you to slow down and appreciate the small things—like the genuine smiles of locals and the tranquil beauty of nature’s backdrop. The restaurants, though few, buzz with the camaraderie of fellow travelers and the aroma of fresh, local cuisine. We didn’t eat there because it was the only place on the island that was crowded.

The waterfront is where the heart of Hoonah truly beats. Here, fishermen and nature enthusiasts alike, are entertained by the dance of eagles and the occasional splash of fish. It’s a reminder of the simple pleasures that await outside the fast lane. Whether you’re an avid fisher or prefer the peace of kayaking, Hoonah’s waters welcome all.

Our exploration led us to unexpected discoveries, from quaint shops, some with local crafts to serene spots perfect for reflection. As we boarded the bus back to our floating home, it was with a sense of fulfillment. Hoonah had offered us a rare gift: a day unplugged from the world and deeply connected to the earth

This location receives a 4.0 out of 5 from me, although depending on your preference of slow rolling or bustling, you may not find this tranquility enjoyable. So, as we wave goodbye to Hoonah, remember, the true essence of travel isn’t found in the flurry of activities but in the moments of connection with places and people. Stay tuned for our next port of call, where adventure and authenticity continue to unfold.
