When it comes to seeking out nature’s grandeur, there are few places on Earth that rival the majestic beauty of Alaska’s fjords and glaciers. I had the privilege of embarking on more than one expedition through these stunning landscapes, and let me tell you, it was nothing short of a 5-star experience from start to finish.
As we cruised along the emerald waters, anticipation mounted for the wonders that awaited us. Our first stop: Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, AK.
Unlike many glaciers, Mendenhall offered us the unique opportunity to walk right up to its icy terminus. After disembarking from our ship and a brief bus ride, we followed a well-maintained trail, bringing us to the glacier’s edge.
Later on our itinerary was Tracy Arm Fjord, a narrow waterway flanked by towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls. As we navigated deeper into the fjord, the landscape seemed to grow more dramatic with each passing mile. The air was alive with the sound of rushing water. Every twist and turn revealed a new wonder, from steep valley walls to hidden coves.
But perhaps the highlight of our journey was on another cruise where we viewed the Hubbard Glacier, a behemoth of ice that stretches for 76 miles. As we approached, the sheer scale of the glacier was impossible to comprehend. We marveled at this brilliant blue ice, snapping photos and soaking in the surreal beauty of our surroundings.
Alaska’s fjords and glaciers are more than just landmarks on a map – they’re living, breathing reminders of the power and beauty of the natural world. If for no other reason, Alaska’s Glaciers are why you need to do an Alaskan Cruise.
