Unpacking the Value vs Cost

Last spring, during a baseball game outing, I made a pledge to my nephews: each could choose a souvenir, no expense spared. One of them, drawn to a glitzy gold pin featuring the Chicago Cubs logo, eagerly made his selection. Its shine outdid my camera’s capabilities; indeed, that $3 pin gleamed with priceless delight. Money wasn’t the point; it was about their joy. So, I indulged him further, letting him pick another – but that’s beside the point.

Later, as my nephew flaunted his new treasure to his dad. He proudly stated “Dad, this was only $3 can you believe that! It’s should cost so much more”. In response to that my brother shared a nugget of wisdom that I loved (but don’t tell him that): “Value isn’t tied to the price tag, but to what it means to you.”

This lesson prompted me to reflect on the interplay between cost and value. While I occasionally share money-saving tips, my aim isn’t to just save a buck. Instead, I strive to offer insights into experiences and products, weighing their true worth.

When I discuss expenses, it’s not just about finding the cheapest option. I consider the holistic experience, factoring in both time and money. This nuanced approach might mean a glowing review for quality but a lower overall rating if the value proposition isn’t there. My philosophy is simple: if I’m paying more, I expect more – and I believe you should too.
